The ActiviZOO

09/09/2020 08:08 h.

Barcelona Zoo invited children and families to get to know the Montseny newt virtually

The Barcelona Zoo is stepping in to help families through the months of confinement in an enriching way. In order to continue maintaining contact with the public, it created ActiviZOO, a new section on its website that proposed recreational and educational activities aimed at children and families. As a partner of the Life Tritó Montseny project, one of the protagonists of this initiative was the Montseny newt (Calotriton arnoldi).

Within the “Activitats” section, the space dedicated to the Montseny's newt offered a series of diverse proposals such as crosswords, a "zoopa de letras", curiosities about the species and the "DibuZOO", among others. The story of the Montseny's newt could also be heard, explained by Quim Fargas, an educator at the Barcelona Zoo. The story of the Montseny's newt can be found on the Youtube channel and in the story section of the Instagram (4th story) of the Barcelona Zoo.

The Zoo's social networks did not slow down during the weeks when the facility was closed to the public and continued to share news and information about the animals, fauna and nature in general and, especially, about the nearby biodiversity. The Twitter channel of the Barcelona Zoo has spread several news related to the Montseny's newt: the 3D video by Oriol Massana, the newts seized in a store in Gràcia, the report Cinco Días (RTVE), the commemoration of the European Day of Parks on May 24th and the release of newts on June 23rd.

In spite of the exceptional moment we are living, the Barcelona Zoo, one of the partners of Life Tritó Montseny, intends to resume its activities of spreading the Calotriton arnoldi live, respecting all the necessary security measures.

The main mission of the Zoo is to actively intervene in the conservation, scientific research and dissemination of wildlife and its natural habitats. This task, that is developed in collaboration with other zoos, universities, public administrations, and centers of investigation and conservation, follows the guidelines and strategies established by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) and is protected by the legislation, norms and existing recommendations in conservationist matter.

11th communication meeting

22/06/2020 12:19 h.

The communication commission meets to continue with the dissemination of the project

On Friday 19th June, the eleventh meeting of the Life Tritó Montseny communication commission was held. Nine representatives of the project's partners attended the meeting, which reviewed the issues related to Life Tritó Montseny's communication. Among others, the documentary, the exhibition, the press releases, the website and the Twitter and Youtube channels were discussed.

The Life Tritó Montseny communication committee was created at the beginning of the project with the aim of managing and monitoring communication and dissemination actions. It is formed by a communication reference of each of the partners (Barcelona Provincial Council, Girona Provincial Council, the Catalan Government through the Department of Territory and Sustainability and the Catalan Forestry, and the Barcelona Zoo) and meets quarterly to discuss and agree on content and proposals for dissemination of the project.

The creation of the committee has made it possible to approve the corporate image of the Life Tritó Montseny; to maintain a constant exchange of information between the project partners; to help define a communication strategy agreed upon by the communication references of the entities that form part of the Life Tritó Montseny; to agree upon the content of the communication materials: brochure, information panels, children's book, exhibition, etc. To establish a common criterion in reference to the news appearing in the press, web contents, social networks and informative material; to compile and elaborate the press dossier, with more than 120 news appearing in the media (press, radio, TV and internet) since the beginning of the project, and to share the lectures exhibited in the dissemination conferences and the scientific and dissemination articles published.

The next meeting of the communication commission is planned for the autumn. Until then, the dissemination actions will continue in full operation: exhibition, website, digital newsletter, social networks (Twitter and Youtube channels).

We release newts

23/06/2020 15:51 h.

Technical staff of the project have released 235 specimens of Montseny newt this spring

With the aim of continuing to increase the species' range, 107 individuals of the western variety and 128 of the eastern variety have been released in four streams in various sectors of the Monteny Natural Park (included in the Natura 2000 Network). These specimens come from the captive breeding program carried out in the wildlife centers of Torreferrussa and Pont de Suert de la Generalitat, and in the Barcelona Zoo. Thanks to this programme, which also includes the Chester Zoo, the breeding of the species has multiplied in recent years and, currently, some 500 larvae can be produced per year.
The objective, on the one hand, is to maintain a genetic reservoir in the centres to guarantee the future of the species in the face of the critical situation in the nature of the original populations. On the other hand, the aim is to increase its distribution area by releasing specimens in new streams. The collaborators of the Grup de Recerca de l'Escola de Natura de Parets del Vallès (GRENP) have also participated in this release.
Within the Life Tritó Montseny project, this is the second release, after the one in 2019. In total, since 2010 more than a thousand specimens have been released in six different streams.

Reinforcing populations

In the western sector, this release has allowed the reinforcement of the Montseny newt (Calotriton arnoldi) population from a stream where specimens were released for the first time last year, with good survival results. In addition, in another stream in this sector, the first population that was created from specimens born in Torreferrussa between 2010 and 2014 has been reinforced. From here, the consolidation of the population with a good survival and reproduction.
Finally, in the eastern sector, specimens have been released in two very close torrents. In one of them larvae were already released in 2015 and it is expected that with future releases these two populations can be connected and form a single one.

Good adaptation of the larvae

Monitoring of the population on the ground has also made it possible to ascertain the survival of the larvae released in another stream in 2015. This confirms the good adaptation of the specimens to the conditions of the torrents regardless of their stage, whether they are released from sub-adults or larvae.
With the experience gained in these first years and the efforts made within the Life Tritó Montseny programme, it has been demonstrated that it is possible to increase the distribution area of the species from specimens raised in the breeding centres, since the adaptation of the released specimens is good and the current production of the centres is high.

6th bulletin

12/07/2020 09:08 h.

It gathers all the informative news of the project that appeared during the months of April, May and June

The 6th Life Tritó Montseny digital newsletter (July 2020) brings together news of the project published on the website over the last three months. Among others, it gathers the news of the release this spring of 235 specimens of Montseny newt (107 individuals of the western variety and 128 of the eastern one), in four streams of several sectors of the Montseny Natural Park (Natura 2000 Network); and of the signing of the first agreement of custody of the territory to preserve the Montseny newt and its habitat between the Diputació de Barcelona and a private estate of the Montseny Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve.

Another outstanding issue of the 6th bulletin is the elaboration of eight video microcapsules that disseminate the most relevant actions of the Life Tritó Montseny project. From 25 June to mid-August, every Thursday one of these microcapsules is being discovered on the social networks. The theme of the eight documentaries, which can also be seen on the Life Tritó Montseny Youtube channel, is as follows: Calotriton arnoldi: an endemic amphibian of the Montseny; Captive breeding of the Montseny newt; Releasing new individuals; The Montseny newt: from knowledge to conservation; Improving the habitat of the Montseny newt; Infectious diseases in amphibians: prevention and environmental awareness; Environmental education, a fundamental link of the Life Tritó Montseny, and Life Tritó Montseny, a collective challenge for the conservation of a unique species.

Other news refers to the holding of a follow-up meeting of Life Tritó Montseny with the presence of external monitoring in which the current state of the actions was assessed, technical and financial aspects were reviewed and new measures and actions to be developed were pointed out; and in the 11th meeting of the communication commission which, given the circumstances, was done telematically.

All the news that has appeared since the launch of the Life project can be consulted on the project's website (section "Evolution") and in the bulletins' history.
The Life Tritó Montseny digital newsletter is published in digital format and is issued quarterly. If you are interested in receiving it, subscribe to it at this link in Catalan, Spanish or English.
