Photographic exhibition

19/01/2021 12:40 h.

The photographic exhibition of the project is published, allowing us to get closer to the Montseny newt and the habitat where it lives

The nature photographer Iñaki Relanzón has been able to capture many spectacular images of the Montseny newt (Calotriton arnoldi) in recent years. Among other aspects, the snapshots show the Montseny newt in the water, its natural environment, the work to recover its habitat, the biosecurity measures, the studies carried out by scientists and workers of the Montseny Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve and its reproduction in captivity.

The images have been mounted on 70 cm x 50 cm panels so that they can easily be moved around in various places. Each photograph is accompanied by a brief explanatory text in three languages (Catalan, Spanish and English). The design of the photographic exhibition has been carried out by the Management of Services of Natural Spaces and the printing has been done in the Diputació de Barcelona.

Three copies of the exhibition have been prepared: one of them will be installed at Masía Mariona (Office of the Montseny Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve), another at the Pont de Suert Fauna Centre and the third will accompany the travelling exhibition of the Life Tritó Montseny project which is called "My name is Calotriton and I only live in the Montseny!

With the aim of spreading the photographic exhibition among as many people as possible, a digital edition in video format has also been prepared, which can already be seen on the project's Youtube channel.

For more information on the photographic report by Iñaki Relanzón, you can retrieve the news published in November 2019 in the News section of the website.

Family Workshop

05/10/2020 15:00 h.

On 4 October, the village of Montseny hosted a family workshop on the Montseny newt

The workshop was held on Sunday 4 October in the village square of Montseny. The proposal was part of the European Day of Parks and Nature Week 2020 and allowed participants to learn about the morphological characteristics of the Montseny newt. During the activity it was explained to the attendees that amphibians cannot be touched directly with their hands because of serious diseases that are affecting many populations of this faunistic group.

When making the newts, the children first weighed the dry plaster, added just the right amount of water and, once the mixture was made, put it into a silicone mold. When the newt was dried and removed from the mold, each child decided how he wanted to paint it and all returned home with their decorated Montseny newt.

The workshop was carried out by the educators of Ademc, who highlighted the good reception and the lively participation of the families. In total, twenty-eight people participated in the activity.

Due to the exceptionality of the moment caused by the validity of the COVID-19, the development of the workshop was adjusted to the fulfillment of the Protocol of measures in the acts organized by the Network of Natural Parks.

Life Tritó Montseny

Biosafety

13/10/2020 15:32 h.

The Life Tritó Montseny publishes a manual of good practices in the field of biosafety

A new manual on biosafety for the discovery of amphibians has been drafted for environmental education entities, nature schools and educational centers. It aims to disseminate the problem of infectious diseases in amphibians and to raise awareness among the population so that they can carry out educational activities without introducing pathogens into the environment.

It is a tool published in digital format and also in paper, aimed at preventing the transmission of infectious diseases caused by fungi and viruses that seriously affect many species of this group of animals.

The document is the result of two working groups organized under the title "Emerging diseases in amphibians: guidelines and biosafety guidelines for educational activities in the aquatic environment of Montseny", in which participated environmental education, conservation and volunteer organizations, as well as educational centers.

According to data from this 2020 from the International Union for Conservation of Nature, 41% of known species of amphibians worldwide are threatened. One of the main factors that have motivated this situation is the infectious diseases caused by fungi, viruses and other pathogens, which can cause massive deaths of individuals.

The entry of pathogens that cause these deadly diseases is therefore a serious threat to wild populations of Montseny newt (Calotriton arnoldi). Aware of this fact, from the Life Tritó Montseny project, a good practices manual has been developed to disseminate the problem of these diseases and to raise awareness among the population so that they can carry out environmental education activities of discovery without introducing pathogens into the environment. This type of activities are considered a very valuable and attractive educational resource to approach nature, know it and, above all, respect it.

The document includes contents such as the measures to be adopted in the discovery of a stream or water point and the handling of amphibians; the protocol for the disinfection of materials for the collection of samples in the field; the sampling equipment necessary to take into account the disinfection of the material, and a section on prevention (malpractice due to ignorance, release of exotic species), among others.

The manual, whose recommendations can be useful both in the Montseny and in any other territory, closes with a decalogue that summarizes what can and cannot be done in relation to the study and handling of amphibians to avoid the transmission of infectious diseases.

The graphic design, very didactic and attractive, has been in charge of Lucas Wainer; the technical content, by Daniel Fernández and Albert Montori, and the coordination, by the Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve of Montseny.

The 5,000 printed copies will be distributed among the partners of the Life Tritó Montseny project (Barcelona Provincial Council, which coordinates it; Girona Provincial Council; the Government of Catalonia, through the Department of Territory and Sustainability and the Catalan Forestry Department, and the Barcelona Zoo), the educational centers of the Natural Park, the environmental education facilities of the territory and the entities participating in the work group.

Parallel to the manual, there is a protocol called "Biosafety: sanitary protocols for activities involving direct or indirect interaction with amphibian populations in the natural environment" which is basically aimed at construction contractors and scientific entities that carry out activities in aquatic environments.

It has been prepared by Daniel Fernández, Albert Montori, Laia Pérez Sorribes and Salvador Carranza, with the collaboration of the staff of the Montnegre Park and Corridor and the Montseny Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve. This is a technical document basically aimed at people who carry out scientific activities in the natural environment.

Barcelona Zoo

The ActiviZOO

09/09/2020 08:08 h.

The Zoo of Barcelona invited to know virtually the Montseny's newt during the confinement

The Barcelona Zoo is stepping in to help families through the months of confinement in an enriching way. In order to continue maintaining contact with the public, it created ActiviZOO, a new section on its website that proposed recreational and educational activities aimed at children and families. As a partner of the Life Tritó Montseny project, one of the protagonists of this initiative was the Montseny newt (Calotriton arnoldi).

Within the “Activitats” section, the space dedicated to the Montseny's newt offered a series of diverse proposals such as crosswords, a "zoopa de letras", curiosities about the species and the "DibuZOO", among others. The story of the Montseny's newt could also be heard, explained by Quim Fargas, an educator at the Barcelona Zoo. The story of the Montseny's newt can be found on the Youtube channel and in the story section of the Instagram (4th story) of the Barcelona Zoo.

The Zoo's social networks did not slow down during the weeks when the facility was closed to the public and continued to share news and information about the animals, fauna and nature in general and, especially, about the nearby biodiversity. The Twitter channel of the Barcelona Zoo has spread several news related to the Montseny's newt: the 3D video by Oriol Massana, the newts seized in a store in Gràcia, the report Cinco Días (RTVE), the commemoration of the European Day of Parks on May 24th and the release of newts on June 23rd.

In spite of the exceptional moment we are living, the Barcelona Zoo, one of the partners of Life Tritó Montseny, intends to resume its activities of spreading the Calotriton arnoldi live, respecting all the necessary security measures.

The main mission of the Zoo is to actively intervene in the conservation, scientific research and dissemination of wildlife and its natural habitats. This task, that is developed in collaboration with other zoos, universities, public administrations, and centers of investigation and conservation, follows the guidelines and strategies established by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) and is protected by the legislation, norms and existing recommendations in conservationist matter.
