NEEMO's external team travelled to Catalonia to monitor the Life Tritó Montseny project

During the morning and afternoon of Tuesday 4 May, all the partners of the Life Tritó Montseny project (Diputació de Barcelona, Diputació de Girona, Generalitat de Catalunya through the Departament de Territori i Sostenibilitat and Forestal Catalana and the Barcelona Zoo) explained the status of each of the actions they are leading. The technical and financial aspects of the project were reviewed and new measures and actions to be developed were pointed out.

The session was supervised by María José Aramburu, monitor of the external team (NEEMO), who has provided advice since the beginning of Life Tritó Montseny and is the interlocutor with the European Commission's European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), until recently known as EASME.

In order to continue with the monitoring, on Thursday 6 May, a visit was made to the Montseny Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve in order to review the actions carried out in the territory during the course of the project. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the visit was made in small committee and not all the entities involved were able to participate.

During the follow-up, it became clear that the Life Tritó Montseny project must continue working to achieve the objectives established prior to the awarding of the project and, at the same time, consolidate the application of good conservation practices in the Montseny Natura network area. The studies and actions carried out within the framework of this project, which has European funding, show that the Montseny newt (Calotriton arnoldi) remains in critical danger of extinction, despite the fact that its population remains stable, especially due to the effect of the area's hydrology and climate change.

The project is currently in an extension period. Once this extension period is over and within the scope of the After LIFE, Barcelona Provincial Council undertakes to continue with the actions promoted by Life Tritó Montseny for the benefit of the conservation of this endemic amphibian and its riverside habitat, especially in the public estate where there is more capacity for protection and intervention.
